The Dwarven Kingdoms
The Dwarves have staked out a world unto themselves, burrowing deep into the hearty mountain ranges of Nemmerle and establishing kingdoms that span hundreds of miles across the world. The Dwarves, if asked, will tell you that Nemmerle is theirs, for they own the princely kingdoms under the mountains and dominate the ores and precious stones the gods left to plunder. Legend tells that Moradin chose five brothers to build him dominions on Nemmerle: Hamar to the West, Voltan to the South, Knorvos to the East, and Bolterros to the North. Vosakaar remained in the center of Nemmerle to settle, while his brothers took their tribes with them. Through the centuries other tribes broke off to form the other six kingdoms. Some kingdoms even have secret routes to one another that snake through the deepest depths of the ground. There, whole wars can be waged with orcs and goblinoids without knowledge of it to man's ears. So it is for this reason the Dwarves know they hold the real power of the world and fight evil on their own terms.
Dwarven tribes certainly exist in hills and mountains outside these kingdoms: some are cast-off tribes and others are colonies that maintain allegiances their kingdoms. But the Eleven Dwarven Kingdoms are the centers of power. It is here they hold fast, venturing out to deal with humans and elves only when it suits them. Some come forth for war against the orc tribes, some ply the merchant routes, and some seek new mountains to conquer.

1 - Kingdom of Yaramiir - Located in the Celdrin Mountains of northern Treviland. Rumored to have tapped a magma fissure deep in the earth that now feeds a mighty furnace of the same name. This furnace has enabled the Dwarves to forge weapons and tools of unique strength and qualities and has diverted their attention from mining to forging. The dwarves of Yaramiir are commonly red-faced and red-haired, thought to come from centuries of tending the hot fires of the mighty Yaramiir.

2 - Kingdom of Raurak - Located under the Whitefire Mountains that run to the edge of Twilight Bay. The dwarves of Raurak tend to be the most worldly-minded of their race, mingling with surface-dwellers more than most dwarves. It is common for them to venture into the Vale of Emeron and trade their wares with the ships that come to port in Illustrim and Phaeria. The Raurak have taken advantage of this relationship by crafting polished stones that are but baubles to them but have become a commodity exported around the world of men. Raurak stones can be found in everything from high fashion to clerical adornments and are even valuable in magical applications for their extreme clarity.

3 - Kingdom of Hamar - located beneath the Hamar Mountains in Plenios and extending south to the Isle of Chance and the northern tip of Celedon, this kingdom has fashioned tunnels that run beneath the ocean itself and bridges the two continents. Unlike most dwarves, the Hamar are adept at dealing with marine races that come in contact with the sub-aquatic tunnels. A common jest is that there be now a race of dwarven mermaids as a result, but it is unwise to mention the joke to the Hamar. They are more like to brag of slaying sea monsters and adorn their halls with their skulls. Legend tells of Borothin Whetaxe who found the lair of a great serpent in its pool and bent it to his will, riding the seas and killing krackens a thousand years hence. Hamar brew a heady ale of foamy green that seafaring men call Wetaxe, a nod to the old legend as much as to the bite of the ale itself.

4 - Kingdom of Bolterros - makes its home beneath the Odinbeard Mountains in the upper reaches of Norgarde. Products of their environment, dwarves here tend to have a bluish hue to their skin and hair and are incredibly resilient to cold. Their appearances have prompted a few unwise humans to ask of ties to the gray-skinned, white-haired Duergar. Such comments are sorely rebuffed. Of all the Bolterrosi dwarves the most famous is Starn Scalethunder, who fought alongside the Norgarde warriors in the famous war of the sea dragons ages ago. Bolterrosi are fond of fighting with pickaxes, which suit them well when working above-ground on the icy mountain-faces. Irsolas, dwarven for 'Ice Tooth', was the name given to an exceptional pick-axe of legend, crafted with incredible power in the ancient times and used to fell the ice giant Norg. It was said the pick-axe disappeared and reappears from time to time in the hands of a worthy Bolterros dwarf if needed in a great battle.

5 - Kingdom of Vosakaar - located beneath the Evermore Mountains that segment western Amadar from the rest of the continent, the Vosakaar play a mighty role in the history of man in this region. Many times the dwarves have closed the pass from Erigoth to the west, and in a few instances the southern branches of this kingdom have made their presence known at the southern pass from Tirudor into Erigoth at the Vale of the Bull's Horns. Vosakaar dwarves are usually on good terms with humans, however, except where mining rights are concerned. Disputes have flared up with lords of Mountrath and Yorn in Treviland, as well as in the Vale of the Bull's Horns. Vosakaar enjoy the company of the lake people in Erigoth, however, and come to their aid whenever called.

6 - Kingdom of Konaar - located beneath the mountain range dividing Darmidia and Mythens, the Konaar are a proud and furtive people who have little to nothing to do with the humans of this part of the world. Long ago the Celedon Empire made bitter enemies of the Konaar and to this day any human seen in a Celedon battle uniform will be attacked. The people of Mythens place great mystical importance on the Konaar and both fear and respect them - fear, for their belief they are related to the mischievous gods of their religion, and respect for the same belief that ties them to the gods. The Konaar prefer to leave humans to their beliefs and trade seldomly with them here, but every so often they do impose their control of the pass leading into the Desert of Scorpius.

7 - Kingdom of Kalaraak - located beneath the mountain range dividing Hyderis and Ongolk, the dwarves of Kalaraak are masters of finding and manipulating underground water sources in a land normally devoid of water on the surface. This has put them in a position of great power when dealing with humans, fashioning aqueducts and redirecting springs for use above ground. The Springs of Karana are a testament to this skill, built during the ancient times by old king Grakkin as a wedding present to his bride Karana from Ederoch, they occupy a massive vaulted chamber a quarter mile square and are fed by an overhead spring that cascades over a pyramid of a thousand stone basins into a large lake complex. Visitors to the Dwarven hall are expected to cast a tribute into the pool in honor of Karana's memory. It is said there are untold treasures now lying in the pool, but none may retrieve them on pain of death.

9 - Kingdom of Voltan - located beneath the mountain range dividing Kyre from Kazeldun, Voltanic dwarves enjoy a rousing relationship with the warlike humans of Kazeldun, whom they see as worthy comrades in arms when they are not fighting them. The pass from Kyre to Kazeldun is fiercely protected by the Voltanic knights, for they see it as their domain and exact a steep toll for passage. Voltanic dwarves take credit for the tradition of humans in Kyre painting themselves for battle, for they do so themselves in an array of earth colors. Metallic blue is seen as an opulent color to wear into combat for them, and marks dwarven chieftains of importance. It was a Voltanic dwarven hero named Shimney Footbeard who faced the great under-serpent Vrydeth two thousand years ago and slew it and, according to legend, sent forth such a shower of serpent's blood that dwarven clerics captured it and made it into a potion of great power. Rumor has it that flasks of Vrydeth still exist today and create great champions among the Voltanic dwarves, but adventure seekers should beware the street vendors throughout Kyre and Kazeldun who would sell forgeries bottled to look like the real thing.
