Rules & Resources
House rules:
- Character Generation
- DM must witness ability scores being rolled up for character generation and the rolls for HP every time a character levels up.
- To generate ability scores: roll 4d6 (re-roll any 1's) and add the three highest rolls. Do this six times. Once you have six scores you can arrange them as you see fit and then shift points between the scores - but no score can go up or down by more than two points.
- At first level take the max HP for your character class' hit die. Every level above first level you make a straight roll (re-roll any 1's) and add your CON bonus.
-
Give me some background on your character:
- name three or more people important to your character - you can list family members, lovers, mentors, neighbors, etc. - offer some brief descriptions of these people and what they mean to you
- name one ore more people who made trouble for your character in the past and why
- describe at least 2-3 episodes in your life that were formative
- offer one thing your character has a fear or aversion to
- offer as least one goal your character has in mind for the future
- Sources: I'm sticking mostly to the core 3.5 books: PHB, MM, DMG but I have access to all 3.5 books. If you want something outside of the big three, get with me for approval.
- Multi-class Penalties: I don't worry about the XP penalty if you cross-class and let your levels get too far separated from one another.
- Spell Components: I've ditched my clever ideas for a middle-ground on components for now. No interest and too many questions. So we'll go without components on all spells except when you get the higher-level ones.
- Fortune Points: in some cases if I feel a player did something particularly clever or cool (which encourages risks and ultimately better story) I'll be awarding points you can use to beef up future rolls. I did this for the first Nemmerle group and hope to continue it now.
- Training : Up to 3rd level I don't really expect anyone to go looking for training. I will be asking for Training plans starting on 4th level (your next level) as you go up.
- Languages : If you take a Language I may be sliding you some translation sheets to allow you to decipher any script you find on dungeon walls that are written in languages you may know. Thibault and Mira are the only ones who have this right now except for "Cold Hand" who obviously would know Elven. I'll get those to you next game.
- Divine Intervention: I will allow a percentile roll on particularly dangerous situations for your character to call out to their deity beseeching aide. On a roll of '01' something awesome may happen.
- Idea Check: also borrowing from Drew's handy DM book, I will allow characters to roll percentile when they are on the verge of figuring something out on their own. If the roll is less than or equal to the characters INT score multiplied by 3, then the DM will share some insight to help the player character. This is at the DM's discretion.
- Please leave a copy of your character sheet with me so we can run you as an NPC if you miss the next game.
- I want story tellers! Not only are you on the hunt for treasure, there will be intrigue involved with NPC's and interesting places, so come up with a colorful background for your character. Include where your character is from, what has transpired to urge them to seek adventure, who are key figures in their past, what possible strengths/weaknesses do their personalities have? Feel free to go to my website and research the world of Nemmerle a bit and come up with a rich background.
- Commit to being here. We'll start out meeting once a month and see if it warrants meeting more often. I'll need email addresses and phone numbers for everyone so we can stay in touch and schedule the next game. It really enhances the game to be here for each session, but of course life isn't perfect. If you miss two sessions in a row, we'll have to talk about how to accommodate your character.
