Considering the
dedication it takes just to become a costumed member --
one set of armor can take a couple of years to sculpt,
mold, and form the plastic parts -- the group has
continued growing on a strong foundation of camaraderie
and teamwork. Their dedication does not just include
building and wearing complicated costumes, but also
countless hours of service to community causes and
Star Wars events. Trips to children's hospitals,
fund-raising for research, and volunteering in costume
for events like Celebration III are just a taste of the
many community-minded activities the Legion participates
in.
According to members, the community of the 501st is
the force that binds their universe together.
"We operate with no funds," says Hiebert, "we have
full-time careers, family, come from all different walks
of life, and yet we still have managed to raise money
for charities, attend conventions in record numbers, go
on hospital visits to children's wards, and participate
in various community events."
What was the reaction of 501st members upon learning
they would be featured in the new LucasArts game?
"I think ecstatic comes to my mind," says Chu-Lin.
"When I was allowed to share this information with other
Legion officers and members, I could just see their
faces light up. Something like this not only allows
Legion members to share the joy of the club with one
another, but with family and friends."
Hiebert comments on inclusion in the game by quoting
Darth
Vader, "The circle is now complete."
"We
started out mimicking the movies, and now we have been
mimicked in the game and novel! It is a great honor to
be included in the
Star Wars universe," says
Hiebert. "I don't believe any other fan club for TV,
film, or music has ever been given this type of
recognition."
The 501st has been previously featured in a novel and
short story by popular author Timothy Zahn,
Survivors' Quest and Fool's Bargain.
Though unnamed in the screen version of Episode III, it
is the 501st that marches to purge the Jedi
Temple, following the newly-named Darth Vader. Look for
stormtroopers
and bounty hunters everywhere to be playing Star
Wars Battlefront II to see themselves in action,
but also because the game itself is great.
"I got a chance to play it while visiting Pandemic
Studios last week," says Hiebert. "I love the
space combat feature! This will most likely become my
new favorite game!"
In addition to the 501st storyline, all-new space
combat, and playable Jedi, Battlefront II
features never-before-played environments straight out
of Revenge of the Sith. The game is due out
November 1st and will be available for the PlayStation
2, Xbox and PC platforms. For more information about the
game, visit the official site here.
